MADRID — The Food and Drug Administration said it's investigating whether a generic version of Viagra could pose a potential health hazard.
The drug maker said Friday it's taking a "black box" look at the potential risks.
The drug's label on Friday said the medication could interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs, including nitroglycerin, and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels, a condition known as "angina pectoris" and referred to as "heart attack."
The agency said the warning also included a warning that "inform your doctor of all medications, supplements, and herbal products you take, including prescription drugs, over the counter products and dietary supplements" that contain nitrates.
Viagra and similar drugs are often taken in conjunction with other medications that contain nitrates.
Viagra is the first approved drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
"Viagra has the potential for serious side effects, including heart attack, stroke, and kidney failure, which can be life-threatening," FDA said in a statement.
A separate study by the pharmaceutical company said the risk of heart attack or stroke was increased in patients taking Viagra with nitrates, compared with patients taking a placebo.
The study didn't find any increase in heart attack or stroke rates in patients taking Viagra or similar drugs.
Viagra is a popular medication used to treat erectile dysfunction. It can be taken by adults and children 18 years and older, and is available as a generic drug under several brand names, including Cialis and Levitra.
